What To Do If The Freezer Breaks Down

the-organised-mum-freezer-breakdownYesterday I blogged about how to defrost the freezer. Today I thought I’d talk about how to deal with the freezer when it breaks down.

If there is a power cut or your freezer breaks down then there are a few simple steps to follow:

  1. Check the electrics. First make sure it’snot the wiring, a fuse or the plug before you call an electrician. It could be something as simple as a fuse.
  2. Do NOT open the freezer! As soon as you open the freezer door you will let some warm air in. If you don’t open it then the contents should stay frozen for up to 12 hours if it is full.
  3. If the problem doesn’t look like it will be resolved in that time frame then ask neighbours and friends if they could store some food for you.
  4. Any food that has thawed, use quickly. Never freeze food again after its defrosted as it could cause food poisoning.

I do hope this doesn’t happen to you. We once lost a full freezer load of food due to a breakdown that couldn’t be repaired quickly. We couldn’t ask anyone else to have it because we’d moved house and were a looonnnnggg way from friends and relatives.

Over to you…

What do you think about the above? Do you have anything to add?
